Final step for the argumentative essay. I changed my position

Do we really need a death penalty?
Death can be defined as the final stage of one’s life. This ending stage can be natural, brutal or even decided by other people. What we have to argue is whether human kinds have authority or power to determine other humans’ end of lives. I believe that human kinds do not have any rights to decide other people’s life. But in reality, there exists a situation called “Death Penalty” which gives end to ones’ lives. I oppose to death penalty, not only because human kinds do not have any rights but also the costs and the fallacy of death penalty.
Death penalty is waste of the tax revenue and the time. Until a man to be sentenced “Death,” there are many trials until the person who was sentenced death exhausts all his appeals. Most of the appeals are fruitless and those are just performed to delay and reduce the penalty. The recent study by Professor James Liebman found that over 2/3 of death penalty cases are overturned on appeal. And when these cases are retried, over 80% of the defendants receive a sentence of less than death. There is DNA testing which is needed to prove that the suspect is a definite criminal. According to the study form Duke University, it estimated that death penalty trials take 3 to 5 times longer than typical murder trials. “Time” is wasted due to fruitless trials.
Also the financial cost of the capital trials which determines death penalty are six times costly than other murder trials. In Kansas, for example, a capital trial costs $116,700 more than an ordinary murder trial. This kind of problem is also existed in California. So the California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice made a report to show public that the death penalty is waste of money: “The report stated that the state was spending $137 million per year on this failed system and that $95 million per year more was needed just to lessen the backlog of cases. That would amount to spending $232 million per year where executions have averaged less than one per year. The Commission estimated that a comparable system that sentenced inmates to a maximum punishment of life without parole would cost only $11.5 million per year.”
It is because of complex pre-trial motions, lengthy jury selections, and expenses for the witnesses. Like these there are financial costs for death penalty. According to Norman Kinne, Dallas Country District Attorney, “I think maybe we have to be satisfied with that as opposed to spending $1 million to try and get them executed.”
Also the death penalty is irrevocable; a dead person can’t revive again. So when juries or judges should be very careful to decide death sentences. But, there are some innocent people who are “murdered” because of this “death penalty.” There are, on average, four entirely innocent people convicted of murder a year and most are convicted of the death penalty. There are hundreds of places where a murder trial can be erroneous. If innocent people die due to false charges, who and how will compensate to the people who died? Not only the people who died, there will be disadvantages to the families or relatives of the people. Who and how will compensate to them? There are some cases that some people who were firstly charged as “murder” were later found “innocent.” For example, Leonel Herrera in 1993 was charged for murdering and actually sentenced “death penalty.” But later it was found that Leonel Herrera is actually “innocent.” According to Chief Judge Rakoff, “Given the number of DNA exonerations in cases of wrongful convictions”, and he admits that there are wrong convictions.
Some might argue that death penalty is needed for social benefit, which reduce murdered or harmed civilians by criminals. The logic of the people who agree with death penalty is this: death penalty is 100% effective in preventing a murder from killing again and criminals will fear death that will reduce crime. But it is wrong. It is found from the research that the death penalty does not really affect the crime rate:These new studies [that claim a new evidence supports the conclusion that capital punishment has a positive deterrent effect] are fraught with technical and conceptual errors: inappropriate methods of statistical analysis, failures to consider all the relevant factors that drive murder rates, missing data on key variables in key states, the tyranny of a few outlier states and years, and the absence of any direct test of deterrence. These studies fail to reach the demanding standards of social science to make such strong claims, standards such as replication and basic comparisons with other scenarios. Some simple examples and contrasts, including a careful analysis of the experience in New York State compared to others, lead to a rejection of the idea that either death sentences or executions deter murder.
And there are some researches that state higher execution rates may actually increase violent crime rates. In California, the average rate of execution was 6 during a year from 1952 to 1967. In this time era, the crime rate was twice than the period from 1968 to 1991 when there were no executions. This kind of phenomenon is also shown in New York from 1907 to 1964 when the execution was performed.
Death penalty was prevalently performed in the past and now it has been decreased. It is hard to find countries that still maintaining death penalty. There are many reasons—as I listed above—that death penalty is unreasonable and inefficient. And the arguments from the people who agree on death penalty are not logical or proved false. So I oppose to death penalty that steal someone’s lives unfairly and unjustly.

3rd revision of my photo essay-no grammar error

It has been more than one year since I entered this school, KMLA. As I attend this school, many things happen to me; sometimes awkward thing, sometimes happy things, or sometimes funny things. As I experience these moments, I recognize “friends” are the most important and valuable things in my life. Friends make me happy and experience and fun, and help me when I am depressed or having hard days. Because I know that friends are the most valuable treasure in my life, there are lots of photos taken with my friends in my computer. My photo essay will be about my friends in KMLA.
It was December 14th 2011, after the final exam of the 2nd semester in KMLA. We—Park Kee Ryun, Koo Han Gyeol, Hwang Soo Shin and me—went to Kyeong Po. We just planned to go there without a specific schedule.
Spending time with something, we found a big snowman which was really well made. We didn’t have time to make a new and big snowman, because we had to eat dinner. So we just took this picture with the made snowman. I put my camera on a big and wide stick, and set the time for 5 seconds. Then we gathered together around the snowman and took that picture. Although we didn’t make this snowman, this photo shows the feelings and the scenes that we experienced at that time.
This photo is a symbol of friendship. To take this photo, after the final exams, we went to Kyeong Po beach and played and talked together. Although there is nothing that shows the process before taking this picture, it shows that all four people are closely related, harmonious and well-fit together.
As well, this photo contains the feeling of being “refreshed.” After the hard time (the final exam), we refreshed our minds and waited for the new start. I reviewed my life in KMLA as a freshman, and thought about my problems. And I knew that past things couldn’t be revised, so I did not regret that I did wrong. I just thought to change my behavior, and hoped not to repeat the same problems. As I took pictures with my friends, I reorganized my mind and promised myself to have a new life in KMLA.
“Freedom” is one of the important values that is implied in this photo. Life in KMLA is really harsh. Students are in an environment where they should compete with each other without leisure time to feel freedom and relaxation due to lots of assignments. But when I played with my friends, it was really happy because I could fee freedom. No competitors or harsh environment, but simply friends and an open scene.
It is so nice to reminisce about the happiest day during my KMLA life. This photo helps me to recharge when I am so tired of my life as a student. As I look at this photo, I think about that day for an hour and crave for the future peaceful and happy days.

P.S. Friends are really important in my life.

something about my debate topic

Death penalty is really really and really sensitive issue, so it is very hard to give an opinion about this issue. But I believe that the death penalty should be preserved and performed.
The basic reason of making penalties and jails is to protect civilians from “harms.” The harms mean the activities and behaviors that are banned by laws, because these behaviors might give physical or psychological damage to civilians. For example, murdering someone is outlawed because this behavior gives physical and psychological damage to other people. I believe that the best and efficient way to eliminate harms is the “death penalty.” But death penalty should be held for severe crimes like murder, not for all outlawed activities. This is because not all crimes give same damage to the people; for example, murdering a person gives really harsh damage to the person who are murdered and people who are closely related with the murdered man, but stealing does not gives severe damage as murdering to the people. I am stating that “death penalty” should be used but to the most severe crimes.
The problem related with money is another reason that I think the government should perform the “death penalty.” Suppose that one person is sentenced life imprisonment. The civilians should pay tax to feed the criminal and to provide necessaries for the criminal until he or she dies. This is waste of the tax that people paid. But if there is a death penalty and the government uses this penalty, we could reduce the money that is spent on the criminals. Then the government can use the extra tax on the other policies like the policy to reduce crimes.
Finally the fear of death can reduce the crime rates. When the government used death penalty, the crime rates fell. This is because the crimes could lead death to the criminals.
Like this the death penalty has lots of advantages, although it might be opposed because of inhumanity.

i changed debate topic

THIS HOUSE SUPPORTS THE DEATH PENALTY

Capital punishment is the sentence of death, or practice of execution, handed down as punishment for a criminal offence. It can only be used by a state, after a proper legal trial. The United Nations in 2008 adopted a resolution (62/149) calling for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, however fifty-eight countries, including the United States and China, still exercise the death penalty. As such, the topic remains highly controversial. Abolitionist groups and international organizations argue that it is cruel and inhumane, while proponents claim that it is an effective and necessary deterrent for the most heinous of crimes.

DEBATE TOPIC

THIS HOUSE BELIEVES MACS ARE BETTER THAN PCS

Ask anyone whether they prefer Macs or PCs, and you’ll most likely get yourself into a heated discussion of which is superior.  Macs are made by Apple and run Apple Operating System. PC (personal computers) refers to a broad variety of computers made by many different companies, including Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and more.  Although Macs do not sell in as high a quantity as PCs, they do comprise 91% of computers that cost $1,000 or more.[1]  Are they truly better, or simply more expensive?

3rd version. Three sides story

Narrative-3rd perspective

The last game of the World Series 2014 is heading toward an end, the 12th inning. The Saint Louis Cardinals is winning a game by achieving three points, and the New York Yankees earning two points. The New York Yankee is on the offense side, and the Saint Louis Cardinals is on the defense side. Victor Manuel Cartel, a winner of “closer of the year” in last year, is heading toward the mound with loud claps from his fans. He gets 5 balls to throw on the mound.
“Look at that ball, it records 102 mph”

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh
“Can you hear the sound of the fans screaming? This stadium is full of shouting and yelling”

Now a judge declares play ball, and the batter, Brett Gardner, is entering batter’s box.

Victor Manuel Cartel easily makes one out count by a flying ball, and he also easily makes second out count by a strike out. So, the only one out count is left for Saint Cardinals to win this game. And everyone in the stadium is screaming out one name “VICTOR MANUEL CARTEL.”

Cartel! Cartel! Cartel!

A 3rd batter from Yankee side, Robinson Cano, hit a ball after a tight match with Victor Manuel Cartel.

“Two outs and one runner in a 1st base, we see the hope”
“The baseball game really starts at 9th inning with 2 outs”
“Who is a next batter?”
Yankees’ fans are full of madness after this hit.

Finally, a batter stands on the batter’s box surrounded by a name “Victor Manuel Cartel.” It’s a Derek Jeter. Now Yankees’ fans are screaming “homerun” as Derek Jeter comes out.

Homerun! Homerun! Homerun!

Now a battle of the century is going to begin.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Victor Manuel Cartel-1st perspective

I made two outs. Although other people think I easily made two outs, I don’t think so, it wasn’t easy. First out that I made was by fly ball, and that ball almost went back the wall. It was very lucky that wind helped me to resist ball from going back to the wall. If there was no wind, I think that ball would be homerun. Also, it was a hard process to make a second out. To make a strike out, I and the second batter went to full count. This means that some batters in Yankees won’t be fooled by my breaking balls.
But, I only need one more out to end this game. If I end this game, I can be a hero. Then, I can raise my annual income and I can be a super star. Then I could live happily with my family after I retire from this place. I need money! My kids are growing and I think I can’t afford their college fees when my kids attend colleges. I want to win this game as fast as I can. I want to see my wife.

Oh, I can hear my fans shouting my name.

 Cartel! Cartel! Cartel!
What a nice sound to hear!

But I can hear disturbing phrase: homerun.
Homerun Jeter! Homerun! You can do it.

Homerun? Do these Yankees’ fans think I will give a homerun? Who am I? I am a Victor Manuel Cartel who won “closer of year” last year. No, no I shouldn’t think about those disturbing words, I should only think about this game, a winning game. Let’s just throw a ball. But that shouting really disturbs me. And I really want to win this game, and want to see my wife.

…………Oh $hit?! The ball slipped down from my finger. Oh no!

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Derek Jeter-2nd perspective

It’s the last chance for Yankee to win this game. I am the hope of the Yankee. If I am out, my team can’t play anymore, we lose.

Homerun! Homerun! Homerun!

What? Are these guys mad? Do they think I can hit a homerun from a Cartel? I can’t hold this suppression. Everybody is watching me. But I think I can hit his ball because I have my secret weapon. When I consume this weapon, I can feel the power of my muscles. And it makes me stronger than before.

Cartel! Cartel! Cartel!

So disturbing noise. Can Cardinals’ fans shut their mouse up? Why they are so noisy? I can’t concentrate on the pitcher. I think I have to make a homerun to shut the fans’ mouths. So fXXXing disturbing. If I become hero of the Yankee, my annual income will rise or other teams will give me better orders than the Yankee. HHHH….What a great life will it be. I can’t stop thinking that. And I feel so great because of my secret weapon.

Uh? The ball is coming toward the center of the strike zone. Can I make a homerun?

Kkkkkkangggggggg

Homerun or foul?

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Narrator-3rd perspective

Derek Jeter hit the ball and it’s going far far behind.

IT’S A HOMERUN. HOMERUN.
Derek Jeter made it. He is a hero of Yankees. He made Yankee to win the World Series.
But it seems that Derek Jeter hit the ball accurately enough to make a homerun? Does he have power to make homerun only by his wrists’ power? This homerun gives me some curiosity.
Nevertheless, he made his team to win the World Series.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Victor Manuel Cartel-1st perspective

Kkkkkangggggggg

Is it homerun?
Really is it homerun?
Do I lose the game?

Something came out from my eyes. And I can’t hear the sound. It feels that I am alone on the mound. I have no power to assist my body.

Oh no... My dream... My money…are gone.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Derek Jeter-2nd perspective

Wow… wow… I hit a homerun. It seems that I didn’t hit the ball accurately. I think that STEROID really works. If I can use steroid, I think I can always make a homerun per game. My dream and money are now achieved. God Bless My Life.

Ah????? Who the hell are you?? Why are you guys taking me to the lab?? No.. I have to celebrate my life… No..

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Narrator-3rd perspective

OH..The steroid is found in Derek Jeter’s body. He used banned drug. How he can do this illegal thing? He is a man without sportsmanship. I think he can’t play as a baseball player on the field.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Victor Manuel Cartel-1st perspective

Oh what? Jeter used the steroid? WHAT THE FXXX? He messed up my life..He took away money and honor from me. If he used the steroid, are there any possibilities that can overturn the result of this final game? Please…I have to win…

After few days..

Derek Jeter went to jail and he sentenced permanent suspension as a baseball player.

Because I knew that friends are most valuable treasure in my life, there were lots of photos taken with my friends in my computer.            It was December 14, 2011 after the final exam of the 2nd semester in KMLA. We—Park Kee Ryun, Koo Han Gyeol, Hwang Soo Shin and me—planned to go to the Kyeong Po beach after the final exam. We just planned to go there without specific schedules. After Soo shin finished the last test, we brought our wallets and just went to the Kyeong Po beach.

Arrived. Blue, blue, blue and blue. I can only see the blue ocean also with the pastel blue sky. Nothing disturbed my sights. And released, my agonies were gone with the wind. I think my friends felt same thing. Then, I and my friends realized that there was nothing to do. But soon we found a boat that we can ride if we pay $10. This boat ride was fabulous, and worth it. Because of the boat’s speed I could feel winter sea’s winds that crashed me, but as I crashed with the wind, I felt lighter than before. This was my first time to understand why people (especially males) are mad at fast cars or motorcycles.

After riding a boat, we just walked along with the beach. Because there was snow on the beach, we made a snowman. This is when we took a picture with the snowman. After I made it, I could feel the happiness that I can’t feel in the school. The snowman wasn’t the cause that I felt happy, but the process and time that I am with my friends without any stress was really happy. Although I failed the tests, I didn’t think about it and just enjoyed that time.

Luckily Soo shin’s father has friend near Kyeong Po beach, so he bought us a dinner. Readers might think we ate sashimi, but we didn’t, instead we ate Korean Chicken. To eat this, I and my friends had to stay in a car for 30 minutes, because the place we ate the chicken was in the middle of the mountain. But the taste of the chicken was worth than the waiting time. It was the most delicious Korean Chicken that I have ever eaten in my life. We almost miss the bus, but safely attended to the last seats of the bus and slept. When I woke up the bus was already in the Sosa, and I could see the KMLA dormitory shining.

This is the end of my trip to the Kyeong Po beach. There are many other situations that I felt happy with my friends. But, I believe this trip was the most memorable to me. And I am happy with my KMLA life.

3rd draft: catfish

Human beings are social animals. This means that human beings can’t live without interacting with other people. As people interacted with other people throughout human history, the term “friend” evolved. To me, a friend is someone who I can really trust.

As I watched the movie “Catfish,” I desperately began to think about relationships” between people. The movie is about a woman, Angela who used a fake ID, Megan, to contact a man; Nev. Megan and Nev were interested in each other and had great time using Facebook, a place where it is possible to meet people without knowing them personally. Nev and Megan felt actual love and affection toward each other under the term “friends” on Facebook. A relationship without knowing the real identity of someone seems awkward, doesn’t it? On the Internet, we use the term “friend” to qualify someone we do not know. Like this, people tend to use the word “friend” more easily and lightly than before. This is why I thought about the meaning of “real friend” in our modern society after watching this movie.

Before the age of Facebook, people met other people and gradually developed their relationships personally. Because people had to meet in a same place to communicate; it actually made people easily to determine a man who is suitable for “friend.” If person “A” wanted to be closer with person “B”, A and B should meet frequently. As they meet each other, they get to know each other because they talk. They talk about social problems, friendships, private life, etc. By having conversations with these topics, both A and B get close enough to know each other beyond just typing. And friend A could also read the inner emotion of friend B, because people see the emotional changes. So, real friends can really understand feelings and minds off line. For example, when I was attending first year in middle school, I had no friends. But, as I and my classmates met frequently, we get to know each other. And as I knew each other better, I could define the people who should I get closer or not. One of my classmates was really friendly and understands my mind and thoughts. So, I and my classmate played together, and became a best friend. And, I and my best friend communicate each other until now and spend time together when I go home.

But, in reality, it is hard to make or to find a real friend. This is because the atmosphere of modern society is “competition” and “individualism.” People mainly think about their own interests, and less about others. Because social interacting involves inherent disadvantages that one person should give up his interests to keep relationship with another. But, as people do not want to give up their interest and people do not want to sacrifice themselves. So, it is hard to find a friend who can really understand other people. For example, when I was attending middle school, I was so sick that I couldn’t listen to the sociology class. So, I asked one of my classmates to lend me a note of the part that I couldn’t listen. But, he didn’t lend me his note with a strange reason: his mother made him not to show his notes to other students.
In the movie, Angela was so bored with her life that she wanted a man who can play and chat with her. She needed a “friend” who can make her life fresh. This shows another part of the problem; she was bored of her life. Because I just show the movie, it is just assumption; but, she didn’t interacted with other people, and other people did not care about her life. Although, she had busy and tough life due to her children, nobody cared about her. Other people stayed at their home, thinking about their own interests. This is just an assumption, but I believe this statement can really occurred as individualism is the characteristic of the modern society.
Not only the atmosphere, but society has changed into a place where people easily contact other people. For example, in a Facebook friend list, there are many people who I don’t know. We just push a button that says “friend” to ask to be “accepted.” Because, Facebook is the largest part of Internet society, there are no limitations with time or place to meet other people. This means that people can easily find a “friend” who isn’t able to meet in real world. This situation led people to stay in their home, which lowered interactions between people in face to face. As people have many friends in online, it decreases the preciousness of each real friend that we establish offline. If you see the case in “Catfish,” Nev and Angela became friend through Facebook. I am not sure about the Nev, but Angela didn’t care about his husband who really cares her. This is an exemplary of the social situation that people don’t feel preciousness about their real friends.
What made Angela’s life so bored and barred. Because I don’t have lots of information with Angela’s life; it’s hard to answer, but I believe that Facebook can be an answer to this question. According to “Catfish,” she didn’t go outside very much, because she was busy on doing her domestic works. Instead of going outside, she tends to use Facebook to make friends. As she continued this life pattern, she had no offline friends.

This movie, Catfish, makes us to think about relationships between people that are established by social network system. Due to social network system, the meaning of friends was diluted. Not only the meaning, but it made people insensitive to real friends. Catfish is a great example that shows these changes on relationships.

∙∙∙∙
 (THE NARRATOR)
October 27th, 2014. The last game of the World Series Baseball is finally heading toward the end, 9th inning. The New York Yankees is on the last offense, and the St. Louis Cardinals is on the defense. Victor Manuel Marte who is a winner of the closer of the year in the last year, is warming up for the last inning. If he blocks New York Yankees’ last offense, St. Louis Cardinals will win the game, and be the champion of year 2014. On the batter’s box, Russell Martin, an 8th batter, is preparing. Is he can be a Yankee’s hero, or are there other people who can be a Yankee’s hero? Let’s wait and see.
St. Louis is winning by achieving three points, but New York Yankees didn’t make any scores.

New York Yankee vs. Saint Louis Cardinals
= 0 vs. 3

(VICTOR MANUEL MARTE)

What kind of ball I should throw? Ummh.. Let’s go with the fastball. Oh yeah, he swung! It’s a strike. Then, I will throw a curve. Two strike. I need one more ball for a strike out.

∙∙∙∙
(RUSSELL MARTIN)
Oh no….it’s already two strike… What will be the next ball? Fastball? Slider? Let’s just swing a bat. F(ire tr)uck! It was a forkball. I should move my ankle downward. Keung. Oh, it’s great that I cut that ball. It’s still two strikes, I have more chances. Let’s concentrate on the ball. I shouldn’t swing, this ball is a ball. 2 strikes and 1 ball.

One out

∙∙∙∙
(VICTOR MANUEL MARTE)
It was easy. Who will be the next batter? It’s Brett Gardner…tricky one. Our team’s catcher is ordering me to go with a slider. Strike! It’s time for a fastball. KKang?! It’s going behind..far behind…Home run? No.. It’s just a foul. Brett Gardner is a nice batter, I should be careful with him. The catcher has same thought with me, let’s throw a fastball. Ball. Then, let’s go with a curve. Ball?! Why is that a ball, not a strike? Two balls and two strikes? What should I gonna do with him.

∙∙∙∙
(CATCHER)
It’s two ball two strikes. Marte is afraid of Brett Gardner. I should make Marte to throw fast ball that he is most confident with. Oh Brett Gardner cut his fast ball! This won’t be easy game. Marte throw a curve near Marte. Yeah, curve. Uh? That ball is heading toward the center of the strike zone. KKang…Gardner hit the ball.

∙∙∙∙
(VICTOR MANUEL MARTE)
Oh..$h!t. Brett hit my ball. He is going to run to the 2nd base, I think. So, frustrating. Let’s just concentrate with the next batter, Derek Jeter. What? Derek Jeter? Oh no… I don’t feel so good about this. Ooops? Why my ball is too slow and heading toward the center of the strike zone? Don’t feel so good…Kkkkkannnnng! The ball is flying back..heading beyond a center fielder..Really? Really is it a homerun?

New York Yankee vs. Saint Louis Cardinals
= 2 vs. 3

Okay…Don’t be afraid.. You are a final pitcher of this team, and you are still winning. Curtis Granderson is a next batter. He is a player who made 37 homeruns in this season. Can I strike him out? Let’s just throw a ball. Crack. Ooops..the ball that I throw hit him, and he knocked off.

1out, a runner in a 1st base
∙∙∙∙
(NARRATOR)
I think New York Yankee can win this game. Although, the next batter is Robinson Cano who is not in good condition, he has been good batter. He can be strike out, but there are one more chance. And that chance will go to Curtis Granderson, a man who is ranked first in homerun place.

∙∙∙∙
(CATCHER)
What should I do with him? Should I believe him one more time, or tell captain to change him with another pitcher? I think he has power but out of control. Who’s the next batter? Robinson Jose Cano…he is not in good condition. I should believe Marte.

∙∙∙∙
(VICTOR MANUEL MARTE)
Ummmh….it’s Robinson Cano. He is a very very good batter but he is not in good condition. No, don’t think about him, just think about the game, not other things. I threw a fast-ball, strike. Then, I will throw a fork-ball. Swung. No sound. Yes, two strikes. For the last ball, I will throw a fork. Tahk..a bat is broken and the ball is heading toward the 2nd base. Oh yeah it’s a double play. It’s three out. I won the game. I am a champion.

Final game result

New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals
         = 2 vs. 3

2nd draft, catfish

Humanbeings are social animals.
Like this, people tend to use the word “friend” more easily and lightly and lighter than before in modern society. This is why I thought about the meaning of “real friend” in our modern society after watching this movie.
Before the age of Facebook, people met other people and gradually developed their relationships personally. Because people had to meet in a same place to communicate; it actually made people more accurately to determine who to be closer to or not. If person “A” wanted to be closer with person “B”, A and B should meet frequently.
But, in reality, it is hard to make or to find a real friend. This is because the atmosphere of modern society is “competition.” People mainly think about their own interests, and less about others. So, it is hard to find a friend who can really understand other people.
This situation led people to stay in their home lowering interactions between people. As people have many friends in online, it decreases the preciousness of each real friend that we establish offline.
In the movie, Angela was so bored with her life that she wanted a man who can play and chat with her. She needed a “friend” who can make her life fresh. But Angela, not reliable but according to the movie, love Nev. This shows that on-line relationships are not limited to friendships, but also love. This shows another part of the problem; although, she was married, she felt love with another person that she doesn’t know. As people can be easily friend with other people, the relationships between people were weakened. This led people to blind their eyes, which made the people hard to find and satisfied with real friends.
This movie, Catfish, makes us to think about relationships between people that are established by social network system. Due to social network system, the meaning of friends was diluted. brainstorm

When I first take this topic which is three sides story, I instantaneously thought about love triangle. I was going to write about love triangle, but this topic that I chose seemed banal. So, I thought about other situations that three people can make tension and emotional bursts. As I think, themes for this assignment were narrowed down into sports: baseball and soccer.
Not all baseball or soccer games are full of tension, so I have to create specific situation to make a good three sides story.
So for a baseball game, I make the game as a final round of the World Series at 9th inning with 2 outs. One runner is on the 3rd base, and a clean up man is on the batter’s box. Then, I am going to write a story on pitcher’s perspective, catcher’s perspective and hitter’s perspective.
Or in a soccer game, I make a penalty shoot-out situation which one player failed to make a goal. So, the score is now 4 to 4, and the only one kicker is left and trying to make a shoot. Then, I will focus on goal-keeper, shooter and the player who failed to make a goal in a penalty shoot-out.

2nd draft, Wal-Mart

On May 22nd, 2006, a massive super store firm, Wal-Mart, withdrew from South Korea. Before Wal-Mart, another massive super store firm, Carrefour, also removed itself from South Korea. However, both firms are successfully operating in other countries, and they are a very big global brand (NY Times, pars. 1-2).

But in Korea, these superstores were replaced with a firm called “E-Mart.” E-Mart has a similar operation system with Wal-Mart, which pursues a low price orientation to dominate the discount retail sector. Then, what are the reasons of their failure in Korea? Another dubious question comes to mind: Can Wal-Mart get any bigger? Unfortunately, yes.

Before stating the reasons of failure, we should know the characteristics of Wal-Mart in the United States, which is successful. The tactic that Wal-Mart used to expand in the United States was building a huge, warehouse look store in rural areas, and then, spread out its store to nearby cities to form retail clusters. So, Wal-Mart used the same tactic in Korea, making huge stores in suburbanized areas. The places Wal-Mart chose to make stores did not match with Korean consumers’ life style and shopping habits. Korean consumers prefer to purchase small amounts frequently instead of buying large volumes at once, because they want fresh food and beverages other than dry goods (Renee B Kim vol. 3). So, Korean consumers prefer to go to a department store, where it has good accessibility. This means that people like to go to department stores which have a convenient transportation system. And urbanized areas do have good transportation systems. Wal-Mart did not learn the shopping customs of Korea.
Not only the tactic but also bad timing made Wal-Mart to choose bad locations in Korea. Other major retailers, E-Mart and Homeplus, had already built their stores in urban areas. They blocked Wal-Mart to build their stores in commercial areas. This situation is also seen in Germany, where Wal-Mart also failed to succeed. In Germany, the Aldi chain occupied favorable places for department stores; eventually, Wal-Mart could only earn undesirable places. Wal-Mart purchased Wertkauf and Interspar, but saddled those stores in unfavorable locations. For example, one of outlets was located nearby couple of sex shops (NY Times, pars. 7-9). James Bacos, a director of the consumer goods at Mercer Management Consulting, said “These were some of the least attractive of the big-box retailers out there. Also, Wal-Mart does not care much about its foreign stores carry the name derived from its founder. For example, in Japan, Wal-Mart took over Seiyu, but keep using name Seiyu, instead of using Wal-Mart. Over all, Wal-Mart is still expanding outside the United States (Times Magazine, pars. 12).
Bad timing was a problem for Wal-Mart in Korea and Germany; but, we could also know that Wal-Mart was only interested in expansion without having enough information on each market.
Wal-Mart failed in Korea, because it did not concern about differences in each countries’ cultures. The vice chairman of Wal-Mart said, “As we continue to focus our efforts where we can have the greatest impact on our growth strategy, it became increasingly clear that in South Korea’s current environment it would be difficult for us to reach the scale we desired.”
When we see the cases of Korea and Germany, it seems that Wal-Mart can’t expand anymore. However, actually, it can. Wal-Mart can expand their industry in China, Mexico and Brazil, which have big markets. For example, there are 295 stores in Brazil which is ranked third in the market of Brazil. This shows positive effect of a Wal-Mart policy which doesn’t change names of the stores that are integrated into Wal-Mart (NY Times, pars. 23-25). Not only in Brazil but also in China, Wal-Mart has been successfully operating.

Wal-Mart’s changes came too late for Germany, but they could help it crack other markets, like China, where it already has 60 stores and 30,000 employees. Far from being chastened by its setbacks, Wal-Mart is forging ahead with an aggressive program of foreign acquisitions
(NY Times, pars. 10).
Wal-Mart is a huge retailer. It has become a main topic in social, economic and political debates. But in this essay, expansion of Wal-Mart is a main topic. Although Wal-Mart failed to succeed in South Korea and Germany, it expands its foreign market. According to NY Times, Wal-Mart has been successfully operating in Brazil, Mexico and China. Base on these facts, Wal-Mart can expand its economical territory until Wal-Mart occupies all world markets.
